Voudú & Haitian painting
Event
Voudú & Haitian painting
The lecture by Rafael Lucas, professor and lecturer at the University of Bordeaux Montaigne, held on April 27, 2024 at the Auditorium of the Museum of America in Madrid, offered a deep insight into the relationship between voodoo and Haitian painting.
Lucas explored Haiti's rich history, highlighting the influence of slavery and the arrival of Africans who brought with them their beliefs and traditions. This resulting cultural mix gave rise to voodoo, a syncretic Afro-Caribbean religion that has permeated various aspects of Haitian life, including its art. Throughout the conference, it was discussed how these cultural elements have been vital to Haitian identity and artistic expression.
In the second part of the lecture, Rafael Lucas focused on the deities and symbols of voodoo, explaining their meaning and relevance in Haitian culture. He highlighted the importance of these symbolic elements in painting and how artists integrate them to reflect their beliefs and tell stories.
We extend our sincere thanks to Rafael Lucas for his enlightening presentation and to all attendees for their participation. Your interest and commitment made this event a remarkable success. We look forward to welcoming you to future events that continue to explore and celebrate the rich tapestry of Caribbean art and culture.
